Analysis of coumarin derivatives by mass spectrometry using silica  substrates

Silicas of different porosity (aerosil, silica gel) and nature of surface groups were studied as substrates for LDI MS on the example of some coumarin derivatives analysis. The results were compared with the data for planar substrates -oxidized porous silicon and porous glass. The influence of sample preparation technique on the analyte fragmentation and yield of the molecular ions was investigated. The most efficient technique was found to be the impregnation from solution. The nature of the solvent as welll as the presence of water effects significantly on the ionization efficiency of coumarin derivatives. The optimum solvent was found to be THF: H2O = 1:1. The results indicate that silica is a promising substrate for the analysis of small molecules, however, the ambiguous influence of varied parameters on the quality of the mass spectra of the investigated compounds makes it impossible to identify the universal substrate.
