Stripping voltammetric determination of heavy metals in toothpastes.
The content of Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn in toothpastes was
determined with the stripping voltammetry. Sample preparation was performed by
total dissolving of a paste (including SiO2) in HF or by oxidative treatment in
HNO3. Nitric acid treatment leads to the complete metal ion desorption from SiO2
surface, and the accuracy of their determination is similar to obtained by
dissolving the paste in HF. It is shown that the existing regulation of
toothpastes by the total content of heavy metals is imperfect, because the high
content of zinc masks the impurity of more toxic elements (Pb, Cu). For the
objective evaluation of the paste quality, it is recommended to use the separate
determination of each heavy metal.
